Involves para-professional engineering work of some complexity. Technician’s duties include working with fundamentals of civil engineering practices and procedures and the ability to learn and understand department specifications and then apply such knowledge in day-to-day activities. Clerical duties includes issuing permits, and drafting routine memorandums and correspondence. Work is reviewed on the basis of results achieved. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Engineering Supervisor. This is a non-exempt hourly wage position.
Technician: Review civil engineering plans and specifications to ensure conformance with the District’s ordinances and policies, calculate connection fees, processes local and state permits for new construction, and manage and organizing project files. To gain insight into construction methods or other policies, employee may be asked to visit construction sites in the field.
Clerical: Issues permits to builders or contractors, schedules inspections, composes routine correspondence, answers telephone and gives needed information to callers. Communicates with local municipalities about projects.
Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school and two years of study or acceptable work experience in Civil Engineering. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Basic AutoCAD experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Technician: Knowledge of civil engineering methods, practices & principles and ability to apply this knowledge to specific problems, simple designs, construction, and surveying. General knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing programs. Ability to work semi-independently and ability to work with others in a team setting, and also with the public.
Clerical: Issue permits to the public, process into main system, schedule inspections, compose letters and memos, organize hard and digital files. Must possess and exhibit good communication, writing and interpersonal skills. Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus. Must be able to communicate clearly and professionally with staff, the public, and other municipalities.
