Second was 2 days then he got fired for taking an extra day a few days later. He went back to work on Monday. I think it is what is best for our family. Remember, every delivery/recovery is different.
I was discharged from the hospital on Thursday afternoon, and my husband was back at work on Friday.
Maybe it would make sense for him to take 10-14 days when the baby is born - I would think that would be more helpful than time before the baby comes unless you have some projects that need doing. You will not want him to use ALL of his available time at once.
my husband took the day off that i had the baby,,,,c-section. Luckily my husband has a very understanding employer; that even allowed him after 3 months to work a few days from home for another 3 more months until i was completely recovered. 28 days is a luxury to some. Archived discussions are usually a bit older and not as active as other community content. Many women aren't. We only have one set of in-laws here and they both were working crazy hours when each of our girls were born....so no help. SO.... this time (I'm due Aug 3rd) he thought he'd be really nice and take off 4 or 5 days which I was fine with... it's more that I usually get! We have a 4 yr old so not too bad but last time it worked out really well.
mine was working nights at a brand new job and not only did he not get any time off (other than a day or two while i was in the hospital), i was at home with a newborn basically alone while he slept all day, and recovering from an emergency c-section. We're planning on doing the same when this next baby comes. Sooo, he ended up taking NO days off after because - I went into labor on Monday April 18th at night. He didn't have as much time with the 2nd kid, but still took off at least the first week. I am feeling a little insulted because I remember what a hard time I had recovering from my 1st c-section. I also had c section but recovered quick. In his defense, he was working a new job that he had just started 2 months before, we only have one child and I felt perfectly comfortable with him going to work. The company my husband works for gives 2weeks paid parental leave. I think, right now, you don't really know how things will be for you, and it's way too early for him to have to schedule that time with his employer. Maybe he can take some days to help make sure the nursery is ready, etc, and take the rest after the baby arrives. I had c-sections both times, too. Good luck getting a whole week! He's going back to work at the end of January, 2 1/2 weeks after my c-section. When I was still on maternity leave, he'd take a day or two off based on how I was feeling and that was super helpful. At 10 days postpartum you should be feeling great. My husband took 30 days off for each child. When we got home he was there, but probably went back to work the next day (again, I don't remember if it was a weekend or not). I don't buy that most guys don't take time off. I am not sure how I would deal with it though. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby. If he waits to take the time off throughout the year, I guarantee it won't be to bond with baby, it will be for a number of reasons which may include time with baby or sports, or vacations, etc... With our first my husband took 3 weeks off. That way he was able to get off work early and come spend the evening with me at the hospital. Summer is a while away. We are both self employed.
I had a bad c-section and a hard recovery, and a baby who needed to nurse 1.5 hours at a time in order to sleep for 2 hours at a time (he was an "inefficient" nurser, had a high palate, and a slight tongue tie). He has 28 days available including his vacation and personal days. LUCKILY, I went in to labor on a Friday (which, coincidentally he had off for a three day weekened that week). First baby was born via emergency c-section at 38+5 after he wouldn't descend into my pelvis. It was nerve wracking and happened so quickly! I wouldn't expect him to take it when we couldn't do anything fun because we just had a baby lol.
I don't know what the normal is. With our second and third it was 2 weeks each time.
My husband owns his own business. My husband owns his own business. And to be honest that was about 1 week to long! Originally he said yes, but now he is saying he may go back after 1 week. Its so important for them to bond with their baby, we are fortunate to get time off and don't take advantage of that.
My husband took off 3 weeks and I had a c-section. I do wish he would have taken more..maybe with the next one.. With our first my hubby took a week off, with our second he is taking a week and half. My husband took 10 weeks with our first and got paid for the entire time due to saved up sick leave and vacation time, his rolls over every year. However, most men that I know that get PTO, take about 2 weeks if they have that much. The Federal Law in the US is as follows: To be covered under FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act):
I was happy with that since it's like pulling teeth to get that guy to take a break.
My parents helped with our 2 girls those days so he only had them part of the time. I was actually back to work PT (6 hour days) when my daughter was 18 days old, but I was a nanny, so she came with me. With my first, he was at the hospital during labor and then stayed in the hospital till we could go home, then was home the next day too, but I don't remember if it was a weekend or not.
I was barely able to walk due to a difficult pregnancy and labor, and I was without family closeby. How Long Does Your Husband Take off Work When After You Have a Baby? So I guess 10 days. When our next baby is born in June, he'll take off about a week, maybe two. No lifting, and as you may recall, you will be sore for some time. Better to take some time then and keep some for later in the year. Or, if you have a lot of trouble sleeping and need some rest beforehand, that might change things. I had C sections with both and needed his help. It's a family bonding time for all of you. Third time mama here. her baby. First time, my hubby took a week off, which ended up going into Thanksgiving vacation (bonus!). Maternity/Paternity Leave And/or Sick Time. It would've been less, but I needed him to take me to the doctor, which ended up adding two days to it. I dont think asking for the time off would make him a bad employee. Congrats and the best of luck making your decision! Our babies were all born in Jan. and we had to save as many vacation days as possible for emergency use if needed. Does your DH want to use some days before the baby to take a vacation with you? By the time he went back to work I felt I was ready to get through the day solo with our son. Once that adorable little one is about 6 weeks old and STILL not sleeping through the night, it will feel like such a luxury to have your husband take a couple of extra long weekends and let you sleep some.
(just this once) hehe It would have been nice with the second 2 but hey what can you do. Don't be insulted, you'll wish that he had more time off later in the year to help out when needed... or actually have a vacation! Be so thankful that he can take some time off to be with you at all. Two weeks with baby one would have been ideal for me. He used two of his weeks and saved one for later.
That's the thing I'm so stressed about. I should have asked him to take off Monday too since we had just got home the day before but that is hindsight (had an emergency c-section so really should have had hubby take Monday and maybe Tuesday off too so he could help me around the house those days while I had more time to recover).
