Laboratory Technician

General Statement of Duties:

Under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, performs technical, professional work of routine difficulty to provide the control testing data necessary for determining the efficiency of the various processes of wastewater treatment facilities and industrial discharges; performs related work as required.

Examples of Work

• · Performs general testing in accordance with written methods.
• · Sets up, calibrates, and operates a variety of laboratory equipment.
• · Prepares reagents for assigned analyses.
• · Documents results of laboratory tests in laboratory notebooks and enters data in LIMS.
• · Cleans sample bottles.
• · Keeps lab area, equipment, and supplies clean.
• · Observes basic safety practices.
• · Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must possess good knowledge of the basic principles and practical applications of chemistry and biology; working skills in standard analytical techniques using common laboratory equipment; experience with computers and Microsoft software.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

The work environment for this position involves working with wastewater samples, hazardous materials and chemicals, and with fumes or airborne particles. May occasionally have to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Acceptable Experience and Training:

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, no experience required. Lab classes in biology and chemistry preferred. After successful completion of a District training program, one must be able to demonstrate the ability to properly perform representative test procedures.
